Short Term DHS Funding Approved
Congress reached a late decision for short term funding of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and approved short term funding to avoid a shut down. This decision was made in order to avert a partial shutdown and so that more extensive negotiations could continue.
Congress vs. President Obama
Although The House voted 357-60 for one week of funding for DHS – Congress is not close to agreeing on a long-term deal. This is due to the bi-partisan divide between the President and the Republican controlled house. However, during the recent vote, 52 republican politicians defected during the vote. Some analysts argue that the loss of support from these politicians demonstrate an additional divide within House conservatives. While there are Republican politicians who are striving towards greater cooperation, there is a strong percentage who intends to block the President’s actions whenever possible.
